This undergraduate course is designed to introduce finite element analysis with computing practices. Finite element analysis converts the conservation principles in engineering, combined with physics closure models, into "computable form" via weak statement theory implementations. Admission to this course requires the student to have completed the first level undergraduate courses in heat transfer, mechanics of materials, mechanical vibrations and fluid mechanics. Hands-on practical computing experience is a course key focus, but algorithm coding is never required! Instead, Matlab, via a specifically designed toolbox, and the COMSOL Multi-Physics Problem Solving Environment (PSE), enable all computer exercises. Reporting of course-integrated computational analysis and design studies is completely online, admitting full data archiving in color. The Internet courseware system/problem solving environment concept is intrinsic to ME 452. With high performance communications, this combination enables a totally time- and distance-insensitive practical course reaching the larger audience with diverse interests in engineering and the sciences. Thereby, ME 452w employs the full complement of modern courseware and software in a real-time Internet video streaming environment. |
